NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN(NID)



The National Institute of Design (NID) is a design school in Ahmedabad, India. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, government of India. NID is recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under Ministry of Science and Technology, government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation. In 2010 Business Week placed NID in its list of top design schools in the world.

HIGHLIGHTS

State of Art Infrastructure includes combination cutting edge design studios, skill & innovation labs and the Knowledge Management Centre and other facilities along with well equipped hostel facilities for the students.

NID has established exchange programs and ongoing pedagogic relationships with over 50 overseas institutions.

The Paldi campus has an International Centre for Indian Crafts (ICIC) with the primary aim to effectively understand the needs, strengths and weaknesses of a particular crafts sector and apply NID's interdisciplinary design expertise.

Research at NID has traditionally been grounded in practice, especially in the field work conducted by its faculty, staff, and students over the last several decades.

The Vijayawada campus was established on September 07, 2014 as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

The Kurukshetra campus is an autonomous institute under DIPP, invites applications for the third batch of its 4 year Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) for the academic year 2018-19.

COURSES OFFERED

Bachelor of Design (B.Des)

This four-year course is offered in eight specialisations from the NID Ahmedabad Campus. This course has a total of 100 seats.

A Bachelor of Design (B.Des. or B.Design) degree is usually an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a course or major that generally lasts three or four years. It is an arts-centered degree that is a counterpart to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree.

Bachelor of Design degrees have been popular in Canada and Australia for several decades and are becoming increasingly popular in the United States as discipline-specific design education expands and becomes more specialized.

Design is the process of creating or executing a work or plan in an artistic or highly skilled manner. A Design can be a shape, a configuration or a pattern. Bachelor of Design is an Undergraduate Academic Degree, awarded for a course or a program in the field of Design.

When we speak of Design, the first thought that comes into our minds is that of Fashion Designing. In fact, Fashion Designing is a specialisation in B.Des.

Master of Design (M.Des)

This two and a half year course is offered in 19 specialisations from all NID campuses (Ahemdabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore). This course has a total of 275 seats.

A Master of Design (M.Design) is a postgraduate academic master degree in the field of Design awarded by several academic institutions around the world. The degree level has different equivalencies; some M.Des are equivalent to Master Degree.

A Master of Design (MDes, M.Des. or M.Design) often follows a Bachelor of Design degree and requires around two years of study & research in design.

The M.Des holders can go for advanced studies like PhD, M.Phil etc that will enhance their career. They can also select the research field to get thorough knowledge about the subject. Job options are available in the teaching area as lectures. They can work as design managers, fashion forecasters etc.

Once the aspirants finish the designing course they can work in reputed firms as designers. They will get chances in corporate and fashion firms. Some other job chances are like fashion brand management, forecasting and fashion styling. They can also work in textile laboratory, fabric export houses etc. .
